12K- Could I get a new hip pleeezzz?

Okay okay week 7 was not what I had imagined....I was feeling all kinds of wonderful after last weeks triumph but it really kicked me in the a** this week. I told you about my hip pain but really didn't think too much about it until my boss got me paranoid. (somewhat easy to do, I am the one that described a pain I had to my doctor as scissors left inside of me.) Anyways, he said maybe now that I am ~~ancient~~ older I could be losing the cushioning between my bones and the pain I have is my hip bone rubbing on my leg bone. Paranoia sets in...

So after looking up many hip ailments and self diagnosing myself I have Hip Bursitis. Sounds dreadful doesn't it? Basically it is a condition that is associated with the swelling and the pain that is focused on the bursa on the inner sections of the thigh. A bursa is a liquid filled sac, one of the parts of your leg that is often used as a shock absorber during impact. Treatment....rest and strengthening and the possibility of cortison injections (uh no thank you) Even with the pain I was able to get one more jog in of 23 minutes on Wednesday but afterwards my hip was in too much pain and my paranoia took over so I didn't jog the rest of the week. I did, however, go to two yoga classes to focus on stretching and relieving some of the pain. Hip Bursitis can be treated by developing stomach and back muscles (which I have none) and working on shortening my stride and choosing level surfaces to jog on. I am hoping the yoga will build the muscle I am lacking. Here are some Yoga poses to help get my hip in shape.

The Simple Warrior Pose

The most straight forward yoga pose of all, but our favorite. By standing in this position you are placing your body into a state of perfect balance, allowing you to completely stretch the muscles that are causing you pain. As you know from out hip pain exercise article, the hip flexors are very important to use and work out so make sure you are hitting them with this pose.

Hero Pose

A less known pose, the hero pose – is great for giving your hard to reach hip muscles a much needed stretch. By starting off on all fours in the cat pose and bringing your rear end down towards your ankles you will be in the hero pose, please find a resource online illustrating the process in order to ensure that you are doing the procedure correctly.

I admit that this whole 12K training has me wanting to get into better health. I am now researching vitamins, yoga, stretches, diet and exercises. What do you do to keep yourself healthy?

Road trip -Seaside Oregon

I like nothing better than taking time off from the normal routine packing up the car and the pups and heading out to places unknown. I have just booked a mini vacation in Seaside, Oregon. I haven't gone since I was in my early teens and can't really recall any of it. My hubby has been wanting to go for ages so when I saw the deal come up on Groupons I knew it was a must. I booked a little beach bungalow for April 11th. Perfect time as my son will be on Easter break and my niece and her family will be settled in their new home in Portland. (They just had a baby and I haven't been able to visit as they live in California) Super excited to see what Bella and Merlot will think of the beach, yup both puppies get to come along on this trip.

Here are just a few of the things I plan to do.

Feed the Seals

Fly a kite.

Gourmet dinner and yummy Oregon wines.

Okay I am not doing this one but the hubby might.

Have you ever been to Seaside? If so what did you love most about it?

12K- You're going down Sista!

Week 6 in officially over! I made up a lot of training time this week and happy to say I am back on track. Last week my workouts were Walk 2, Jog 8 and repeat 3 times. Part of my problem was that I started each jog out too fast. I was running an 8 minute mile, Frickin fast if you ask me! But by workout two I slowed it down, took in the scenery, gave myself little pep talks all as I ran and wouldn't you know it....I ran over 10 minutes without stopping. I decided to mixed it up a bit and did a 3walk/8 jog, 3W/5J, and ended with a 3.5W/10Jog and I could of kept going. I am now officially 1/2 through my training so for my third workout this week I decided to do the full 12K and see just how far I've come from day one (when I could only run 1 minute at a time) Happy to announce that I jogged/walked the full 12K in less than 2 hours. I felt so good that I even sprinted the last 100 yards. "You're going down Sister!" My sista got nothing on me this week! I am sure to be so sore tomorrow that I hate life but I don't care, right now I am on top of the world.

Flat irons were not all create equal. How do I know that statement is true? Just look at the bottom drawer of my bathroom vanity….. many unused styling tools clutter the floor. Impressed I decided to give my hair a shot. I used a higher temperature (370)because of the thickness of my hair. No disgusting burning smells, my hair was protected the whole time and I didn't even use any hair product.

I am completely hooked on House Hunter's International. If you've never seen the show it is basically a quick look into moving internationally. Some families have millions to spend while others only have enough to rent. I think my hubby and I are so drawn to it because most of the families moving are starting new lives, learning new cultures, and/or starting new careers; something we know quite well. About 10 years ago we moved our little family to the island of Rarotonga, Cook Island for about a year. It is a tiny island in the South Pacific. I home schooled my daughter on days that we sent our son to a public preschool. Our PE classes took place in our backyard on the bogey boards and math consisted of waiting tables at the local cafe. Life was good, easy, and Slow. Now that our kids are almost grown we have started planning our next adventure. Where to go and for how long? Watching House Hunters has given us insight on cost and culture and now we think maybe we'll rent a place for a few months than move again to another -of course this can't take place until Phoenix is in college, but as I wait I can gather all the places I'd like to go. This week it is all about Belgrade, Serbia.
Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe and has since ancient timesbeen an important focal point for traffic, an intersection of the roadsof Eastern and Western Europe. I would rent a furnished apartment near the Republic square that overlooked the pedestrian street. Lined with shops and restaurants I would have a never ending view that changed daily with the crowds. Each morning I would walk down the 5 floors to get to my espresso at Speak Easy before heading out to one of the many shopping areas or maybe I would just spend the day discovering the city? Possibly a walk through the Old Bohemian Quarters?....

12K -Back one step, forward two

Week 5 I realized just how far back the snow took me. The first day back into my usual training I was suppose to walk 2 minutes and jog 8 minutes but as soon as I started my jog I knew it just wasn't going to happen. I had my inspiration music on (Shut up by Black Eye Peas) telling myself to just shut the negative out and focus on the 8 minutes but my body had other plans. It stopped jogging just 3 minutes into the song. My knees were killing me ALREADY and I really didn't want to be there. After the 1.6 miles I felt disappointed and frustrated that I would never reach my goal. Two days later I decided that I needed to stop feeling bad for myself and get back to my training. So this time I put on my knee support, new slightly worn in shoes, and decided that I would at least run 4 minutes at a time. My hubby came out for support this time and it helped -( even though we have been married for over 20 years I don't want to look like a wimp in front of him) so it kept pushing me farther. But again after finishing my workout I felt that the 12K was just getting to frickin close and I would never make it....... until TODAY. Yes, today I felt renewed. It could of been the yoga class on Thursday to refocus me and breath out the negativity, maybe it was the talk I had with a co-worker that assured me I would be able to finish the race without embarrassing myself but whatever it was today I ran. Instead of being labored my breathing became unnoticeable (until I focused on it) and my legs got into a rhythm that seemed to carry me farther than I had gone before. I felt like I finally found my zone. I am not completely on track again from the week off but I made up a good amount of training this week and YES I was able to run the 8 minutes scheduled.

I admit it....sometimes when my friends are out (like this New Years) I find ways to amuse myself, little goals I give me and my friends to fill our time in between the merriment. This year I decided to see how many pictures I could be in. Not ordinary pictures but strangers trying to capture the night festivities with their close friends. I often wonder when they upload their nights photos to facebook how many pictures I am actually in and who they tell their friends or significant others the he** I am. 12K Training at a halt (week 4)

Week 4 has been a tough training week. I wanted to start a full protein food week to help jump start my body and I wanted to have at least 4 training sessions ....well, I wanted a lot of things that didn't seem to happen. One week the eye of the tiger the next week that same tiger closed it's eyes and hibernated Yes, I did get out 3 times for walks but couldn't get myself to run (not even on the treadmill) Walking in 12 inches of snow definitely works different muscles and my calves are having a fit! What makes this week worse is that my sister has been training hard and now is up to jogging 1/2 mile, easily. She ~~taunts~~ motivates me with her emails and text as she achieves yet another goal while all I am achieving is the snow-cation bulge.

As I look outside it is so easy to allow myself to take a "snow day". Must get moving!

Winter storm but staying warm

I live outside of Seattle and if you have been watching the news you know we have had quite the winter storm blow in. It started snowing Sunday night, on Monday I went to work for a short time but have stayed home since...(considering going in today but then it started snowing again) For those that get snow each year I am sure you think of us as a bunch of wimps but it is difficult when you don't have to deal with it regularly and do not have snow tires. We lost our electricity yesterday a few times, thank goodness for our fireplace!

I admit I like being locked down in our home with my family. Phoenix has been having a wonderful time sledding and playing smear the queer and of course our 4 legged friends keep me entertained.

Bella is just too funny and these videos crack me up.

A late Winter storm set in yesterday. We love the snow (except to drive in) After my hubby picked me up from work we decided to head outdoors to get some training in. No running today but a good walk would do my sore muscles good.

Our Bella is such a joy to watch playing in the snow. Here is a clip of her and her big sister getting ready for our walk. I just love how she hops around.

12K Week 3 "Eye of the tiger"

Week 3 had some up's and definitely some down's. My weeks training started out on Tuesday with a 4 minute walk combined with a 3 minute run repeated 3 times. That wasn't so bad....I thought, so by the second training day I had the eye of the tiger (like Rocky) and I decided that I could run a whole 1/2 mile without stopping. I put on my shoes and headband (very important) and left my door determined to do the full 1/2 mile. Why I didn't stretch or warm up is beyond me? I was just so determined and focused nothing could have stopped me. It was about 4:30 pm and dusk was approaching quickly and with the temp. outside a cool 34 degrees I knew I needed to get on my way. As I left my house I could hear the music cuing and Rocky was there pushing me along......Just after 2 minutes I was dead tired and breathing in the freezing air that my throat literally felt like it was on fire. But I kept going. By the 3rd minute my shins started to plea with me to stop but I kept going. By the 4th minute (longest I have gone so far) my knees hated me but I kept going. To my surprise I made it the whole 1/2 mile in 5 minutes. Way faster than I thought I could go. I felt for the first time that just maybe I could actually do this thing and then..........
I woke up the next morning to find my knees and thighs so sore that it was difficult to walk up the stairs and because of the additional "push" I gave myself permission to eat whatever I wanted. The treats didn't stop the next day- Once I start I have a very hard time stopping, and I ended up filling my belly with snacks ALL weekend long. I did, however, get one more training session in to complete the 3 required. PHEW!
This week I plan on getting back on track by eating healthy and doing at least 4 workouts of Walk2, jog 5.

12K -2nd week success

Monday morning started my third week of training for the 12K in April. Do you know what that means? I am officially up to 3 minute runs. Last week I completed 4 sessions of 5 minute walks combined with 2 minute runs, I would do this combination at least 3 times during my workout. My hubby has been such a great help. He has been walking almost daily for the last 2 months and I was able to join him on his 1-1/2 hour outings. I still feel as if I will never get to my goal in such a short amount of time left; I only have 11 weeks to go and it will take me at least 8 weeks training to get in shape for a 5K (uh I’ll be short a good 7K) The only thing keeping me going during these early stages is knowing my sister is training hard (sure she has it in her head to beat me) and her funny motivating emails. Here is just a clip of her most recent email to me:

It's nice to be reminded every now and then just how awesome we are! We can do anything when we actually put our mind to it. And.....we do it better than most people who've been doing it forever. We have only just decided to run a 12 k and look how good we are already doing. We haven't been training that long. As I was running today, I was reminded of how much we can do when we want to. Awwww, its nice to be the beautiful people!!

Salad jar

Balsamic Vinaigrette
Recipe from Creative Kitchen Adventures

3 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 tbsp balsamic vinegar
1-2 tbsp water (more or less depending on the consistency you want)
2 tbsp honey (can be replaced with agave or brown sugar)
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 tsp black pepper

Directions
Place all ingredients into a small jar (canning jar). Anything with a lid works well.
Shake to mix thoroughly. Stores in fridge for 1-2 weeks.

*Or use my blending method: throw everything in the blender, blend for about 30 seconds, then store in a jar for 1-2 weeks.

Salad
Makes 2 salads (Salads pictured were made in 32 oz mason jars)

1 cup cooked quinoa
2 big handfuls spinach
1 cup chopped mushrooms
1 cup cherry tomatoes
1/2 red onion, diced
4 tbsp balsamic vinagrette
(Really you can use any ingredients you like but watch the layering)

Layer the ingredients in the jar as follows:
dressing
onion
mushrooms
tomatoes
quinoa
spinach

The most important part of the layering is making sure the dressing and the spinach (or whatever 'leaf' you choose) don't touch. As long as they stay separate, these salads can be made up to 4 days in advance and will stay fresh in the fridge with a lid on. This is one of my tricks to eating salad everyday for lunch at work. I make a few jars on Sunday night and just grab one to bring to work everyday. When you're ready to eat, just shake it up. YUM

12K (Week 1 is over!)

Week one is done and I feel so far from my goal. For 2012 I had wanted to start the Dukan Diet and continue to learn yoga but with my sisters ~~nagging~~ encouragement I had registered myself for a 12K run knowing that I am not a runner! or a jogger for that matter. Still I found myself motivated to, at the very minimum, beat my sister and of course not cross the finish line 2 days after the race begins. I started to research running a 12K for beginners but every site I looked up started with, "this workout was designed for the person who can already run a half an hour." That was not me....I was lucky to be able to run 1 minute at a time. I am happy to announce that I can now officially run .....wait for it......2 minutes without stopping. Okay, maybe to you it is not much of an achievement but running is HARD! I was able to complete my first weeks training even adding one additional session. I continued to eat most everything I wanted but tried to refrain from potato chips and other empty calories (Ice cream was my couch companion and that is not going to change) Over all I feel pretty good. 12K still seems so far from now but like the sign says, I am still lapping everybody on the couch.

Da vinci revealed

Over the Holiday break I had a couple surprises that definitely made the holiday stress dissipate. My first surprise came when Marie from Allthingsmarie emailed me to let me know that I had won the Da vinci dress from Shabby Apple.

Shabby Apple contacted me for my information and next thing you know I had my new dress just in time for Christmas eve. It was perfect for my families get-together.

I loved the style of the Da vinci, something about pockets in a dress makes me all gitty.

Run like Phoebe....

Phoebe had it right...Running can and should be fun. Running is the number one fat burner and mood enhancer but it is not easy to dive into. You must have a plan to ease into it so it becomes something you love to do. Here is how I have slowly got back to running.

Find the best shoe for your foot. No arch ? Choose a stability shoe like Under Armor Revenant. Normal Arch? Choose a shoe that offers moderate cushion and stability. High Arch? Choose a cushioned shoe that help diffuse the shock in the lower leg.
Form- Quick short steps are better than longer strides which can hurt your lower back.
Let your foot roll smoothly forward and push off with your toes.
Keep arm relaxed and bend them about 90 degrees letting them swing front to back.
Lean forward about 5 degrees to maintain momentum without sacrificing your posture.

Ease into running with this routine.....
Do this routine at least 3 days a week. Remember to warm up and cool down with at least a 5 min. walk.

Week 1- Walk 6 min. Jog 1 min. Repeat 3x, workout 3x week
Week 2 - Walk 5 min, Jog 2 min. Repeat 3x. w/o 3x week
Week 3 - Walk 4 min. Jog 3 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week
Week 4- Walk 2 min. Jog 5 min. Repeat 3x. w/o 3x week
Week 5 -Walk 2 min. Jog 8 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week
Week 6- Walk 2 min. Jog 9 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week
Week 7 - Walk 1 min. Jog 11 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week
Week 8 - Walk 5 min. Jog 20 min. Work up to 30 min. W/o 3x week
Now get out there and run like Phoebe.

Christmas came and went too quickly. It seems that the festivities take a second to the chaos more and more each year, something I wish I knew how to change. And although I did my "duty" with a smile; bake and decorate sugar cookies, make my special Christmas peppermint bark, give to my charities, visit all the neighbors, and spend Christmas eve with my sisters and their families. This Holiday seemed a bit less magical. Could it be that my kids are growing and the wondermeant of the season no longer shows on their tiny little faces? Maybe its the economy and its restraits it put on me? Whatever the reason....Christmas came and went too quickly.

12K - Challenge (new goals for 2012)

Its true! My sister persuaded me to register for the 12K. A 12K might not sound like that much to someone whom regularly works out, walks, or run but for someone who just started taking walks again it is a HUGE commitment. Why not the 5K? Would be a easier goal, something feasible to train for in the 15 weeks ahead but NO my sister has to go all in - what is the saying? "Go hard or go home?" And although she does not run, jog, or barely workout I am sure she thinks she will win the race or at least beat me! Can't let that happen, nope I have started a running routine that estimates I will be ready for a 10K in 16 weeks. (I guess I'll just drop after 10K and will need to be carried the rest of the way)

My first 8 week training schedule:

Week 1- Walk 6 min. Jog 1 min. Repeat 3x, workout 3x week

Week 2 - Walk 5 min, Jog 2 min. Repeat 3x. w/o 3x week

Week 3 - Walk 4 min. Jog 3 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week

Week 4- Walk 2 min. Jog 5 min. Repeat 3x. w/o 3x week

Week 5 -Walk 2 min. Jog 8 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week

Week 6- Walk 2 min. Jog 9 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week

Week 7 - Walk 1 min. Jog 11 min. Repeat 3x, w/o 3x week

Week 8 - Walk 5 min. Jog 20 min. Work up to 30 min. W/o 3x week

Jogging 1 minute at a time does not seem like a hard task until you jog for 1 minute.

Not feelin like the ultimate baker I decided to go for a different type of Christmas gift to exchange with my neighbors this year (really how many cookies can one eat?) While reading my favorite blogs I came across this festive DIY, Christmas in a Jar. Thanks Diana from exPress-o for posting!

Can't say that I started off on the right foot. This is what happens when you leave the fruit drying in the oven and your husband decides to make nachos.

So after another trip to the grocery store and 8 more hours of drying time I was able to complete my little bit of Christmas in time for our neighborhood walk.

I must say ....they came out pretty cute.

The new year is fast approaching. Any big plans? I have a feeling that 2012 will be a challenging year but I'm ready to tackle it.

A Crafty Christmas

This last week I got my craft on! After our traditional cutting of the tree it was time to get my home ready for Christmas. Not sure why but each year I bring out all the old decorations and decide I can't use them the same way as the year before. For a person with my lack of creativity you would think it would be best to just put up the same decorations in the same place in the same way, it would definitely save time and a lot of hair pulling BUT I JUST CAN'T!

So after countless trips to the local Goodwill, Dollar store, and Ben Franklin this is what I've come up with.

I hope you all had a fabulous Thanksgiving. As in the past years I like to create a fun and festive centerpiece. This year I had planned on an elegant centerpiece but my search for small white pumpkins ended with disappointment and I found myself planning my table centerpiece last minute. Why are there NO pumpkins after the 31st of October? With a little help from my friend and my sister this is what we came up with.

I borrowed a piece of barn wood from my friend. Bought a few candle holders from the Dollar tree and limes from the grocery store and had a few clementines laying around so I decided to make an somewhat edible centerpiece. I first used a sheet with the outdoor pattern and placed my last years burlap runner on top. We wanted to give the centerpiece some height so we place it on top of some upside down candle holders. This was needed as the barnwood was too long for the table. I love the final product. Perfect width for the table and guest enjoyed the whimsical feel.

As posted on Finacial fit @ Yahoo finance -Flip that statistic and start 2012 ahead of the game with an extra $1,000 in your savings account. Seem unrealistic during two months when you're more likely to be making gift-lists than budget cuts? Lucky, we have experts on hand for guidance and motivation. "It's 100% possible for the average person to become $1,000 richer by 2012 if they start right away," says Joel Ohman, founder of the frugally-minded websites CreditCardChaser and CarInsuranceComparison.

He gets right to the point: "There are two different ways to become richer—either make more money or spend less money." Here, a dozen thoughtful ideas on spending, saving and earning over the next 60 days. Mix and match to ring in 2012 $1,000 richer.

Save money:

Pack lunch: Cut costs by $7 each weekday and pack a sandwich instead of coughing up for another calorie-laden salad or sandwich. Expected savings by 2012: $200

Clip coupons: Some $485 billion worth of coupons were distributed in 2010, knocking down retail prices an average of $1.46 per coupon. You don't need to be an extreme couponer to save, but borrow a page from their book and do a bit of legwork. According to Coupons.com, the average weekly savings on grocery and personal items is $40. Shoot for $100 off the monthly grocery bill and you're on your way to a wealthier 2012. Most common coupon items are cereal, yogurt, portable snacks and baby products. Expected savings by 2012: $200 ( I started using coupons a few months ago and I have been able to cut my grocery budget by $150.00/month.)

Maximize your credit cards: Make your credit cards work for you this season. Take a serious look at the rewards programs your cards offer. Jake Gibson, co-founder of NerdWallet, a personal finance site that ranks credit card perks and bank rates, stresses that maximizing rewards can earn you a serious percentage back that could go a long way towards your savings, but it depends on your spending habits. His pick for Holiday 2011: the Chase Freedom card. "You instantly earn $200 back when you spend $500 in the first three months, plus there's no annual fee." NerdWallet has a tool to find the right card and reward system for your spending. Expected savings by 2012: $100

Check your policies: Use couch time to compare insurance quotes from at least five different car insurance companies to see if you can save money on your car insurance rates before the end of the year, says Ohman. Thomas Fox, a personal finance expert at Cambridge Credit Counseling says a phone to service providers—cell-phone, cable, internet, utilities–call can be just as helpful. "Many providers offer budget plans, or plans not widely advertised," he says. "Explain your usage for the service and see if the provider can offer a more affordable plan that will suit your needs." Expected savings by 2012: $100

Piggy bank upgrade: Forget the change jar, LearnVest's von Tobel says to create a jar for $5 bills. "Make a new rule that you can no longer spend fives," she says. "And every time you get one, just put it away. It's an easy, fun way to upgrade the penny jar and you'll see savings grow in no time." Expected savings by 2012: $100

Skip your latte: While that skinny vanilla latte might be delicious, it's putting a serious dent in your budget (not to mention your waist). Downgrade from a $3 latte to a $1 brew from the corner deli and you'll notice the savings right away. Better yet, home brew. $100 expected savings

Make money:

Be a Black Friday pirate: Get up early (or stay up late) Black Friday morning and buy ultra cheap discounted electronics and then resell them on eBay," says Ohman. While this practice, akin to ticket-scalping, can be quite profitable (especially when purchasing must-have electronic gifts) and is not illegal, it does require some dedication and standing in long lines. "It's not for everyone," says NerdWallet's Gibson. Expected earnings by 2012: $400

Clean house for cash: Your house is bursting with cash you just don't have yet, says von Tobel. Sell any summer clothes you didn't wear this summer on eBay or a local consignment shop. Open an Amazon store or log onto BookScouter to clear off your bursting bookshelves. Even old electronics can bring in a profit. She suggests Gazelle, a resale site for gadgets. If you're more of a stoop- or yard-sale type, von Tobel suggests teaming up with neighbors. "The more goods, the more shoppers you'll lure in." Expected earnings by 2012: $300

Make TV-time profitable. "If you can multi-task and spend time on Facebook while watching TV then why not put some of that TV time to good use and do a little work on the side from your laptop," asks Ohman. "It doesn't have to be anything super strenuous but offer a gig on Fiverr or complete some tasks on Amazon‘s Mechanical Turk." You won't make a fortune, he says, "But every little bit adds up." Fox agrees, and adds that looking for gigs specific to your skill-set can be even more profitable. "Look for odd jobs on Craigslist or consider joining elance.com, guru.com, or freelancer.com, for freelance work that may be appropriate." Expected earnings by 2012: $200

The year-end ask: As a fan of big-picture financial thinking, von Tobel's top tip is to use the final months of the year to initiate a year-end review and raise conversation with your employer. "Understand what you're getting paid in comparison to your peers," she says, "and begin the negotiating process." Even if you score just a few percentage points in your salary, your annual earnings, 2012 has the potential to be a much for profitable year. Long-term returns.

BONUS: Avoid The Holiday Spending Trap

Layaway can be more trouble—and money—than it's worth, warns Gibson. "Walmart charges a $5 service fee and a $10 cancellation fee if you change your mind," he says, and other retailers have similar restrictions. Best Buy, for example, only offers the service for purchases of $250 or more and charges a 5% purchase fee. Your best bet, he says, is to sock away the cash and spend when you have it.

Budget-busting can leave you starting the New Year in debt. "Set and stick to a firm budget," says von Tobel. According to the National Retail Federation, the average American household spent $681 on gifts in 2010. "Overspending and going into debt is a huge trap," she says. "We're in a recession—every single person you know doesn't need a $20 gift."

I responded to Misikko that I would be happy to review the product and immediately I was given a tracking number and date to expect my package, talk about great service.

I was pleasantly surprised to receive a full bottle of Hana shine shield but they also sent me a lovely heat resistant bag, a Hana sleeping mask and files, Bobbi Brown make up brushes, and bath flowers.

The next morning I decided to try the Shine Shield. I would do my normal morning routine and see if anyone would notice a difference. I used about a quarter size for all of my hair. Pumpkin Bread Pudding with Dulce De Leche
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 1 hour Yield
Serves 8
Ingredients
Unsalted butter, room temperature, for dish
1 can (15 ounces) pure pumpkin puree
1 cup whole milk
1/2 cup heavy cream
2 large eggs, lightly beaten
1/4 cup light-brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon coarse salt
3/4 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon anise seed, roughly chopped
10 ounces day-old bread, such as brioche or sourdough, cut into 1/2-inch slices or 1-inch cubes
1/2 cup pecans, roughly chopped
1 cup homemade Dulce de Leche, or store-bought, warmed

Directions
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter a 2-quart baking dish. In a large bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree, milk, cream, eggs, brown sugar, salt, vanilla, cinnamon, and anise seed. Arrange bread in dish. Pour custard over bread and top with pecans. Bake until custard is set, 45 minutes. Let cool slightly. Serve warm or at room temperature, drizzled with dulce de leche.

This is definitely the dish I will be trying out this year. I love surprising my family with something unexpected.

Be 10 pounds lighter by next week

That wouldn't actually work for me with Thanksgiving around the corner. What would be nice is to be 10 pounds lighter before all the Christmas and New Years parties; with this diet it is possible.

Have you heard of the Dukan Diet? This diet is well known in Europe (also known as the Kate Middleton diet) and just starting to make its run here in the United States.

Basically the diet is similar to the Atkins and the South Beach diet with a few modifications. Unlike the Atkins there are NO fatty proteins while only certain vegetables are allowed in the first two phases which makes it a bit more strict than the South Beach. The cornerstone food is oat bran - it slows sugar and fat absorption.
The 4 phase method needs to be followed closely to achieve the desired weight loss.

The Attack Phase: Pure proteins
Length: 2 to 7 days.

The Cruise Phase: 100 Unlimited foods in alternation
Length: 3 days for each pound you want to lose

The Consolidation Phase:
Average length: 5 days per pound lost

The Permanent Stabilization Phase:
1 pure protein day every week for life
3 tbls of oat bran daily

What I like about this diet compared to the four thousand I have tried is that it begins with calculating your ideal weight. When asked what I would like to weigh I said 125 pounds. After evaluating my body type, my comfortable body weight, height, and how I normally lose weight my ideal weight is actually 131 pounds. I also like that the book talks about locking in your new weight. I have always thought that my body needs to be trained to "get comfortable" with a weight before I start to eat normally and this is the first book that I have seen that addresses how to do that.

I ordered the book today on Amazon and will be ready to start it right after Thanksgiving weekend. ( Have to enjoy all the left overs) If I would start the diet today I would be my ideal weight by Jan. 1, 2012, I'll settle for 138 by the New Year instead.

Sneak Peak - Black Friday

It been released! The Black Friday Walmart Ad. Do you brave the crowds? We have a sort of tradition at my house. I do the Thanksgiving Dinner, games, and all the hosting duties while my sister does the Shopping. As I go to bed Thanksgiving night she is layering up, grabbing the kids and saying goodbye. When I wake up in the morning she and the kids are just getting home. I'm not sure how she does it, especially dragging our kids around but they always have fun stories to tell. Like last year....the teenage boys decided to put random CD's (the ones no one would consider buying) in everyones cart so that they would get to the check out line and wonder who they were buying it for. Some people would buy the cd while others would pull it out scratching their heads. Another story - The teenage girl was getting cold and smiled nicely at a boy next in line. Before we knew it she had his blanket, his chair, his cocoa, and was playing games on his nintendo.

This year it looks like some of the stores will be opening early, I wonder how this will affect my sisters shopping plan. For me nothing is so great a deal that it will get me out of bed.

I can not even believe that Thanksgiving is just a few weeks away. I haven't even started my Christmas shopping or decorated for the Fall. We will be hosting Thanksgiving again this year. Each year I try to come up with a new theme, this year is becoming quite the challenge. I need some inspiration!

Any fabulous ideas for Thanksgiving you'd like to share? Fun games to play? Last year I bought wind up toys for one of the family games, this year I have no ideas. HELP!

5 Things - recovery revealed.

My family is very MESSY; didn't realize how much I picked up after them until I couldn't
Surgery recovery kind of sucks especially when you develope an infection.
Needy cat and swollen belly is not a good combination.
Never have I watched so much tv, Right now the top 21 sinful vegas hot spots is on...it was this or another infomercial. ( I can not buy one more kitchen chopper or floor mop, my hubby will kill me)
Taking only 3 showers in a week makes you feel Very Attractive.

To be honest I am finally feeling a lot better. My surgery went well. It was a good decision to go for the full Hysterectomy as my results were positive and I would of ended up having to get it anyways. It is never easy deciding between a less invasive procedure or just going for it but this time it saved me from having to have two surgeries. I was released last Tuesday and was walking around. On Friday things turned for the worse and by Monday I was calling my doctor and being prescribed a heavy antibiotic. No energy and a bit nauseated at time but feeling so much better. I have enjoyed the beautiful flowers being delivered and well wishes and extra sleep but can not wait to get back to normal.

Life Update:

Tip #4: Don't forget the tip When polishing, polish the tip of the nail as well. This helps cut down on nail polish chipping.

Tip #5: Consider a shimmery color. The little particles of sparkle will help polish cling to your nails.

Tip #6: Apply a clear topcoat Topcoat helps extend the life of your manicure. You can use the base coat as a topcoat. Do brush topcoat on and around the edges of nails as well, it's an extra seal against chipping.

Tip #7: Allow proper drying time Make sure you give your nails a good 45 minutes drying time before handling objects. Once dry time is over, submerge nails in cold water then apply lotion. This allows for a slippery surface until nails are completely dry. For pedicures, wrap toes in plastic wrap if you're wearing shoes other than flip-flops or sandals.

Life update:
Today is my birthday and we are celebrating with dinner with the family. A Duran Duran concert is a great place to people watch; really people you need to update your dance moves.
Laughing so hard you tinkle tells me its time to start kegel exercises.
Pending surgery makes me hungry for potato chips and chocolate. I am up to a full bag of chips in one sitting now. Yikes.
A sushi lunch date with my hubby makes me dance in my seat.

Barn dinner

When planning a celebration dinner one doesn't usually think of a BARN, except my hubby of course.

For our 20th Anniversary Dinner hubby decided on Russells. Russells Dinning and Bar is a refurnished barn built in 1928 that is surrounded by blackberry bushes and office buildings. Although that does not scream fine dinning Russells showed themselves to be a hidden gem amongst the industrial park.

Our waiter was knowlegable and attentive with a down to earth feel. His recommendations of the scallops and Halibut were right on. My hubby enjoyed the scallops to start while I devoured the basil tomato soup which was delightful and so creamy.For dinner I had the seared chicken with herb risotto and he had the halibut and mashed potatoes. Both items we would order again and again.

After dinner our waiter surprised us with not one but two candle lit desserts. YUM.

After 3 hours you would think our waiter would want to get rid of us but instead he asked if we would like a
tour of the barn. Why yes we would.

How would you like your next event to be held here? Gorgeous.

This weekend we head off to Chelan where we will go on wine tours, have amazing dinners, and finish off with his adventure on the Trike Flight.

20 Years and counting

Today I celebrate my 20th Anniversary with the man I love.

We first met when I was 19 years old. I “borrowed” my older sisters ID and headed out on the town with some friends to go dancing at a club they heard about in Seattle. At the time I lived in Puyallup which is about an hour away.

I was so excited; this was the first time I had snuck into a bar. The club was dark and dingy with a cross-dresser for a bartender but the music was pumping and I was ready to dance.

My hubby will tell you that he saw me the moment I walked in and for the rest of the evening he was developing a way to start up a conversation. To be honest I saw him too. How could I not…… He had long black hair and he was wearing Levi’s with a black blazer, completely my type. I have never mentioned that I noticed him too, he had a very big ego back then and it’s good to remind him that he chased me. Lol

As soon as he approached me I knew he was one of those guys that could charm panties off any girl so I made sure I was not one of his many conquests. I was pleasant and cute and smiled a lot but never gave him any hints that I was interested. Once the night was over and it was time for me to go home he actually followed me to my car. After a bit of flirting he asked me for my number. I refused letting him know that I don’t give it out but I would take his number. At that moment he reached into his pocket and pulled out a napkin with his name and number. I busted out laughing. “Do you keep napkins with your number handy at all time?” I asked with a smile and giggle. After all these years he tells me that this was the first time he saw my boobies. No it’s not a typo. I was wearing a baby doll dress with biker shorts and as I bent over the neckline of the baby doll opened up and those days I seldom wore a bra.

The next week he called me at my work (he found the number and called for my schedule) he decided to drive an hour to have a late dinner with me at Red Robin. At that time he didn’t know that this was going to be our only one on one date for a month. He was 4 years older and I was still so young that for the next month I brought a chaperone everywhere we went. I think he was in a bit of a shocked at first but definitely never showed it. He managed the month beautifully and I knew he was a keeper. 20+ years later he still makes my heart beat faster and although we have had our ups and downs we never quit on each other.

Yes a Trike Flight over Chelan, WA at 6:00. The views should be breathtaking.

I love the gift of adventure. Once on valentines day he received Scuba lessons, on his 38th birthday he went parachuting and now on our 20th anniversary a Trike flight. After his 30 minute flight we will enjoy a quiet dinner and possible over night stay. (Still deciding on where or if to stay)

Negative can actually be a Positive! and Positive could really be negative... Today this word negative really made me happy, glad, cheerful, content and most of all Cancer FREE.

I shared, very briefly, that I was having some health concerns lately. One test turned into many and what was unknown and scary turned into doable and livable.
I carry the cervical cancer virus and on my last pap I was flagged as High Grade abnormal or precancerous. A few biopsies were preformed and the test show no CANCER- yeah! But I am not completely out of trouble. My condition WILL become cancerous so my options were hysterectomy or a procedure that will remove part of my uterus for further testing. I opted for the removal of just Part of my uterus. This may mean I still have to undergo a hysterectomy but I was willing to risk having to do two surgeries rather than loose all my girly inners if I didn't have to. :)
Surgery has been set and I go in Sept 27th. I actually feel somewhat relieved that I still have options.

Update: The procedure above is called a Leep and it removes part of my cervix not uterus. But now I am considering the hysterectomy as I have talked with so many woman that have had it done and feel that it was the best option to have peace of mind. :) Thanks for all the supportive comments, they really do help.

College bound

Leaving the nest.....My 19 year old daughter officially moved out yesterday. She already started college last winter but while living at home and although she has been in and out of the home over the last year it felt very FINAL. After attending UW last year she felt Western Washington University would be a better fit. So we packed up her bed and most of her belongings and drove them to her new home which she shares with 3 other guys.

Her face said it all- She was ready to be on her own, living her life on her own terms. She shares an old remodeled duplex built in 1918; her room is not officially considered a room but she is overjoyed at the location (just a couple of blocks from campus and downtown)
